Vera Molnár

Vera Molnár, an influential artist born in Budapest on January 5th, 1924, and now residing in Paris, embarked on her artistic journey by studying painting and art history at the Budapest College of Fine Arts from 1942 to 1947. Her artistic vision began to take shape in 1946 when she ventured into creating non-representational images. In 1960, Molnár co-founded the groundbreaking Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV), becoming a leading figure in exploring new artistic frontiers, particularly in Concrete Art. Subsequently, she delved into the world of computer graphics, fully embracing it from 1968, alongside her husband François Molnár, co-developing the “Molnart” software program. Molnár’s seamless integration of letters as pure abstract forms, combined with her embrace of disorder, granted the machine a degree of autonomy, leading to uncharted territories within her creative practice.

Vera Molnár’s creative journey has been marked by numerous accolades and achievements. In 1976, she held her first solo exhibition titled “Transformations” in London, captivating international audiences with her pioneering works. Her collaboration with the esteemed Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris in 1979 further solidified her position as a visionary artist. Throughout her career, she has showcased her works in major European exhibitions and even created an installation piece for the esteemed Foundation of Concrete Art in 1990. Notably, a significant monographic exhibition titled “Extrait de 100 000 milliards de lignes” was held in Ivry-sur-Seine in 1999, celebrating her remarkable body of work and lasting influence.

In 2022, Vera Molnár embraced the exciting realm of NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens), bringing her visionary art into the digital space. Her project titled “2% of disorder in co-operation” made a significant impact, with its first edition sold at the renowned auction house Sotheby’s during the Natively Digital 1.3: Generative Art sale. Her remarkable artistic journey continues, as her upcoming on-chain generative art project, “Themes and Variations,” is highly anticipated for release in July 2023 as part of Sotheby’s inaugural generative art sales platform. Vera Molnár’s pioneering spirit, innovative techniques, and enduring influence in the digital art space solidify her position as an iconic figure, inspiring generations of artists to explore new horizons in the intersection of art and technology.
